Duck Inn offers accommodation in the finest traditions of hospitality and comfort with
gracious and attentive service. Ideally situated in a quiet road in the suburb of
Meerensee, Richards Bay, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. We are only 2 kms from the
beach and shopping centre, one hour by car to Hluhluwe and Umfolozi Game Reserves
and one and a half hours from Durban.
Six guest rooms, all are en-suite, and attractively decorated. Remote control TV's with
DSTV, tea and coffee making facilities, together with air-conditioners and fans are in
every room. There are also two self catering cottages in the garden.
Each guest room remains true to the old-fashioned charm of the Inn with comfortable
beds and en suite bathrooms. Air conditioner and fans, tea/coffee making facilities, a
well stocked bar fridge and TV's with DSTV for your enjoyment. Plush towels and plenty
of space to make you feel at home.
All rooms are unique and separate, offering guests their own entrances and privacy.
In 2007 Duck Inn won the Zululand Chamber of Business Service Excellence Award for
the second time and is a past winner of the Tourism Kwazulu Natal Service Excellence
Award.

Duck Inn : History
Duck Inn is truly a "home from home" for people who enjoy fine accommodation as well
as personal service and hospitality. A lovingly restored original old Richards Bay house,
the Duck Inn offers six guest rooms, each with en suite bathrooms. Here you can relax
in comfortable surroundings and enjoy a style of gracious living.
Breakfast, each morning you may help yourself to home made muffins or scones and
partake in a delicious full breakfast prepared for you to enjoy in the comfort of the
conservatory.
Duck Inn is a birders delight with 35 different specious visiting the garden. Plenty of
benches or deck chairs, to find the spot in the garden to look for those birds.
The lounge offers the opportunity to relax and get acquainted with your host as well as
other guests. Plenty of reading material, TV with DStv and music are available or you
can simply enjoy good conversation with new friends in a warm and friendly
atmosphere over a glass of Sherry or Port.

Richards Bay
Situated on KwaZulu-Natal's fertile North coast, Richards Bay started out as a holiday
town and has developed into a major port. It is situated on a lagoon in the Mhathuze
river and its potential as a great natural harbour were confirmed in 1897 after a detailed
survey was carried out .Originally, the lagoon provided a home for a vast population of
aquatic birds, attracted to the area by a rich supply of fish.
Crocodiles, sharks and hippos frequented the lagoon, as did hunters and fisherman in
search of trophies. A monster crocodile (6.7m) was shot here. The area of sheltered
water was twice that of Durban’s harbour.
The mouth was open to the sea and the depth, though only three meters, could be
dredged to allow passage for very large vessels. When development started,
conservationists objected and in 1935 the 1 200 hectare lagoon was declared a game
reserve, whilst in 1945 the adjacent land was declared Richards Bay Park.
The town of Richards Bay was laid out alongside this park, on the elevated northern
slope of the lagoon, overlooking a fine stretch of water. Today Richards Bay is a thriving
industrial port with a direct rail connection to the mines for coal and other mining
exports. The town was named after Admiral Sir F.W. Richards, a commander of the
British Naval Division during the Anglo-Zulu War.
