SURROUNDINGS

Caves

Under the ground are many surprises: caves, thousands of years old which have been
patiently carved out by the water. Near Porto de Mós, the caves of Alvados (Grutas de
Alvados), Santo António and Mira de Aire and in S. Mamede the caves of Moeda (Grutas da
Moeda) bear witness to a subsol rich in chalky remnants.
Thermal springs
The thermal springs of medicinal mineral water are another of the attraction of this area.
The most well-known spas are the "Termas da Piedade" in Alcobaça, recommended for
the treatment of ailments, particularly those of the digestive system and rheumatism. As
well as the health aspect, they are excellent places for the rest and relaxation, sought after
the anti-stress effect that they offer.

Water Sports and Night Life
The beaches are places par excellence for nautical sports, windsurf, surf, fishing, jet-ski
and other water activities. At the end of the day, tanned bodies dress for other passtimes,
the brightly lit out-door cafés and the intense night-life of the area.
Historical Monuments
Sensitive to the passing of time, the collective memory has been enhanced with tales that
have strengthened its understanding. Through the region Man has left a trail of his
presence, leaving behind a desirabe architectural heritage.
The Monastery at Batalha is one of the most outstanding national examples of gothic
Arcitecture.
The Monastery of Alcobaça (Mosteiro de Alcobaça - picture to the right) is classified as the
before-cited one of the World Heritage by UNESCO. Dating back to the start of the
Portuguese nationality, here the largest church in the country of a Roman-Gothic style is
found. The tragedy of the forbidden love of D. Pedro and D.a Inês de Castro is
remembered as their tombs are located here. The superb castle of Leiria provides a
spectacular view of the city which is worth a visit on foot. In the municipality of Ourém one
of the most well-known and visited religious spots in the world, the Sanctuary of Fátima
Gastronomy
Among History and stories, knowledge and pleasure, we highlight the gastronomy of the
area, ready to be tasted in some of the excellent restaurants found here. The speciallities
are varied but shellfish, fish stews, seafood rice, sausages, roast kid or black-puddings in
rice are worthy of note.
Craftswork
In the traditional workshops the dexterity and ingeniuty of the craftsmen may be
appreciated. Unique pieces made using age-old techniques which have been handed
down through the ages. Typical dolls from Nazaré, crystal and glassware from Marinha
Grande or Alcobaça, which is also rich in pottery and ceramics.
