Casa Alta Royal Lodge ( Ourem Castle, Portugal )
Casa Alta Royal Lodge is a former royal lodge located high within the precincts of the Castle of
Ourem just 12 minutes by car from the famous Fatima Shrine and in the center of many must-
see cultural and historic sites, Unsurpassed in the region for its comfort, decoration, intimacy,
attention to detail and service, guests enjoy the best of two worlds... access to all the famous
sites, and at the same time, peace and quiet away from all the crowds and commercialization.
Casa Alta, for a reasonable fee will meet you at the airport with a uniformed chauffeur and car
and arrange all your travel and touring needs.
There are only three rooms, exuding old world charm, one of which is a suite. They have
stunning views, private bathrooms, wood-burning fireplaces, embroidered sheets and superior
duvets, antiques, fresh flowers, and complimentary artesian water. A full English-style breakfast
is included. Hand-finished laundry is available at a nominal charge.
Your host, Fr. John Guilbert Mariani, Chaplain to the Royal House of Portugal, restored Casa
Alta to its original ambiance, recapturing its first purpose to provide an elegant, intimate oasis
of peace and reflection. Whether you are passing through or staying longer, Casa Alta Royal
Lodge is truly one of the real treasures of Portugal.

Facilities:
Salon
The Salon is the meeting place of guests, family and friends. You can almost hear the rustle of
silk and the spectral voices of the royal court attending the resident kings and queens of long
ago. (Some do.) More often, the brighter strains of classical music drawn from modern
cassettes are the rule. Here, guests can quietly read or form in conversation groups, as they
wish. In this room the residents can take lunch or dinner, too, and the candlelight dinners are a
memorable and often talked about experience.
Garden and Roof Terraces
Both the Terrace and the Gardens of Casa Alta Royal Lodge overlook the fertile Ourém Valley
(formerly known as the Auren Valley, meaning “golden”) where one can enjoy meals or
afternoon teas.
The breathtaking views from the Saint Joseph Roof Terrace look across the valley to the Serra
Daire Mountain with its 10th century Shrine to Our Lady of Ortiga. Piercing the horizon at a
distance is the tower of the famed Basilica of Fatima.
Both the Gardens and the Roof Terrance are a serene and relaxing ambient for sunset dining
and stargazing.
The Tower Seating
The tower seating area is a special part of the garden terrace. Fitted into its contours is a
circular banquette and table with a natural reed umbrella modeled from Roman prototypes. The
tower is the only surviving rampart tower left at the castle, and it provides superb views from its
perch, as it did in days gone by as a watch tower.
The Library
The Library contains several hundred books for guest use. They are mainly devotional and
inspirational in nature. However there are also a selection of histories, travel guides,
biographies, art books and novels. In addition, there is a sound system, a cable television, and
a library of videos and DVDs.
