About our Mt Hood Inn:
afternoon of conversation, bird watching or taking in a movie you have selected from our
video collection. The Inn's Library (pictured above) contains many of Diane's books on Mt.
Hood Hamlet Bed And Breakfast's Great Room is the perfect place to settle in for an
architecture and English History. It is a cozy place to curl up with a good book, fire in the
fireplace and while away a winter afternoon. Enjoy the feel of the outdoors while lounging in
the Bed and Breakfast's Garden Room. It is a transition from the dining room to our Bed and
Breakfast Mt. Hood's outdoor spa, yet a cozy place to curl up with a book or to take a nap.
The B and B's upstairs hall can be enjoyed with a cup of coffee or tea while you peruse the
activity resources available. You may add a pin for your home town to our world visitor's map.
Use the Inn's telescope to watch birds or see climbers and skiers on Mt. Hood, or to simply
view the Oregon country side.
Paul's parents, Bertha and Bernard Romans, purchased this property in 1948. Over the
years, Paul's mother developed a magnificent garden which she attended past her
ninety-fifth birthday. Mrs. Romans taught home economics at the nearby rural high school.
She became a widow shortly after her retirement but wished to continue living on the
acreage.
It proved a challenge for Mrs. Romans to keep the house in adequate condition for her
comfort level and, when Paul and Diane obtained the property, they knew they would have to
build a new home. After each had enjoyed thirty-year teaching experiences in Portland, they
felt energy remained for a new adventure. With the variety of vegetation and the terrific view in
place for them, running a bed and breakfast clearly presented itself as a wonderful second
career.
Lodging History at Mt. Hood Hamlet:
The house was designed by Earl Seaman, an architect who creates houses from Everett,
Washington to Bend, Oregon. A Romans ancestral house built in the 1770's in Rhode
Island served as the inspiration for the new Bed and Breakfast in Mt Hood, Oregon. With the
ability to build an inn from the ground up, space for modern bathrooms (two with Jacuzzi
tubs) could be incorporated without sacrificing bedroom or closet space and windows were
placed to take advantage of views of the Oregon country side. Paul and Diane acted as their
own contractors, putting in long days for more than eighteen months in order to create a
haven for travelers to our unique area. A local cabinet maker enhanced the Great Room and
Library with extensive bookshelves. One visitor described Mt. Hood Bed and Breakfast as
possessing "a relaxed elegance", which is precisely the environment Paul and Diane
envisioned. Forty-eight years after the Romans family first moved onto the property, Paul and
Diane moved into their new Bed and Breakfast and became innkeepers.
Assisting with inn-keeping duties is Debbie Godin. Inn-keeping is a natural progression
from her previous positions and she is a true asset in the smooth functioning of the bed and
breakfast. A great deal of the credit for the expansion and maintenance of the extensive
garden must be given to the Rodriguez family. While tagging along with their mother, the
youngest two children water pots and trim flowers. The oldest two boys have helped with
major outside projects while Mrs. Rodriguez and the oldest girls have taken on a good deal
of the daily cleaning projects.
The Bed and Breakfast's 'Backyard Habitat' designation by the National Wildlife Federation
for the food, water, shelter and nesting area we provide, has attracted over 45 different
identified bird species, providing many birdwatching opportunities. Our Columbia Gorge
Bed and Breakfast is a Green Inn, using earth-friendly cleaning products, serving local
produce when possible, composting on site and recycling all materials accepted by our
local waste stream. The Bed and Breakfast's heating and air conditioning comes from
geothermal heat exchange.
After more than ten years in business as a Mt. Hood Bed and Breakfast, Paul and Diane
have as much enthusiasm as ever for operating a four-bedroom, home-stay bed and
breakfast inn. It is the couple's pleasure to share their spacious Inn and act as a travel
resource for their visitors.
Guest Rooms:
Four individually unique guest rooms have been created at our Hood River Bed and
Breakfast, each with wide-plank oak floors, original artwork and family pieces. All have
private baths with tub/showers, TV and DVD/VCRs. A large collection of videos is available to
