The Biltmore Suite
The most visited attraction in all of North Carolina is the world famous Biltmore Estate, the largest
private home in the U.S. and it's right in our own backyard. We like to think that George Vanderbilt
would be proud of our magnificent 950 square foot master suite (one of our two honeymoon
suites). Our Biltmore suite follows on George's philosophy of creating rooms where elegance and
mystery speak to each guest and where every item in the room, whether of utility value or for
artistic interest has a history.
A king bed fit for a Vanderbilt is complimented with a balcony designed to catch the setting sun
and a screened porch to welcome the first rays as they breach BearWallow Mountain to the east.
Guests can enjoy a large propane fireplace, a wet bar, microwave, coffee maker and a new 36" flat
screen TV with DVD player. $350
The Biltmore bath is designed to elicit its own "wow's" with what we say is the largest Jacuzzi this
side of Vegas and a shower that features steam, body sprays, a hand held unit and a traditional
shower head. There is also a towel warming drawer, double vanities and marble and glass
everywhere. It's the kind of room that guests don't want to leave and many do just that, cocooning
for the weekend and enjoying all the peacefulness and romance they can.
The Sacre Coeur (Sacred Heart) Suite
The Sacre Coeur suite is the second honeymoon suite at the Chateau and is named after the
Church in Paris of the same name. After many trips within and outside the country, we both agree
that the Sacre Coeur Church of white stone on a knoll in Montmartre is one of the most beautiful
Churches of the world. The suite’s cathedral ceiling and massive stacked stone fireplace seems
to be reaching towards the sky while the view from the huge king bed is described as awesome.
No wonder we chose this name. In keeping with its rich heritage, the suite is decorated with
Parisian and “religious” photos and artifacts. $295
This suite began life as the living room of the private home. Part of the conversion consisted of
adding stained glass to a doorway and enclosing a screened-in porch to produce a new bath and
hot tub area.
The suite now features a wet bar, TV and DVD player and comfy chairs to warm your toes in winter
or to watch TV in comfort and luxury. The new bath is finished in black and while tile and gorgeous
granite. The shower is designed to be handicapped accessible with 2 seats, double shower
heads and very convenient grab bars. In an adjacent room one finds a 5 person hot tub with 19
jets and enough seats to provide excitement for some time. There is also a patio area and a
private entrance to the back yard and patio areas.
El Paso del Norte Suite
We lived in the El Paso desert for 8 years and enjoyed the crystal blue skies, mountains and low
humidity very much. The city ranges from 3000 to 5000 feet above sea level. Although the two
areas seem so different, the mountains of Western North Carolina and the mountains of Western
Texas have much in common with their different but spectacular beauty. Since this suite is at the
end of the house, the windows face South and West (South West – get it?) giving the space lots of
light. $225
The namesake of this suite was once called El Paso del Norte (the pass to the north) when under
Spanish rule. During our 8 years, we acquired many artifacts from the South West. We scattered
these throughout the suite giving it a Western flair added the modern comforts of a double spa
tub, separate bedroom, loungers and bed space for 4 or more.
The suite is our only accommodation which boasts a complete kitchen rather than wet bars. It is
located in the carriage house above the garage and separated from the main house by a
breezeway. It has an entrance to the main house but also has a private entrance to one of two
porches. These features give this suite the feel of a bed and breakfast with the privacy of a cabin.
For these same reasons, we accept children and pets in this suite.
Garden Room
This room was the guest room of the main house. The size of the room easily accommodates a
king bed while leaving ample floor
space and a place for a future fireplace. The aptly named room has a view of the pool and the
surrounding gardens. In addition
there is a private door which opens to a personal garden with access to the pool area.
Duing our international travels, we were lucky enough to visit Hong Kong, China and Thailand.
We also each received gifts as
part of our business dealings. (Korea, Japan?) These cultures put much value into gardens and
so we felt it was fitting to use this
room to display some of our prized possessions. By coincidence, this room faces East. $225
This room contains a large bath area with double vanities, a Jacuzzi bath with hand painted and
signed tiles and a marble wet bar.
The ceiling height toilet tank, reminiscent of the early 19th century is one more connection with the
esteemed Biltmore Estate.
These items certainly impart the elegance that one would want to present as your personal
guestroom.
Northern Lights
When we traveled to Stockholm and then to Jukkas Järvi inside the artic circle, we were
enormously impressed by the surroundings and by the people who live in the land of the sun half
the year and land of no sun the other half. The room we chose to call the Northern Lights is
dedicated to these people and to the marvelous time we had sleeping in a hotel made solely of
ice and snow. The hotel is made anew every year from the frozen river Torne which used to be the
only transportation from the frozen North to the civilization of Stockholm. $185
This room was originally the daughter’s bed room and was decorated all in pink. We have
removed the pink and replaced it with white coverlets and icicle lamps depicting the frozen North.
The pale green comes from the color seen at sunset.
The display case across one wall which used to house the young mistress’s doll collection, now
houses many items from the Northern part of Europe and Asian. The new fireplace, double spa
tub and a stand alone shower with rain maker shower head completes this room’s amenities.
The Stirling Castle
Our trip to Scotland was memorable; the Scots were so gracious and amidst all the history and
heritage, the castle in Stirling Scotland is one of the most well preserved strongholds of the area.
This room was once the daughter of the house’s private guest room. When we decorated it with
an antique English bed room set, we decided to it call it the Stirling Castle after it’s namesake in
Scotland, the site of the battle depicted in the movie “Brave Heart.” In keeping with the antique bed
room set (updated with a new memory-foam mattress), the brown, and tan are softened with
shear gold and pink floral drapes over the headboard and the window with the antique shades.
$185
Metal artwork, Gaelic tapestry, wash stands and wash basins continue to set the tone of a
Scottish Castle. Although, the Scots did not have a luxurious 2 person spa bath, they did rely on
fireplaces and would have appreciated the double sided fireplace in this room.
