The Cheapest Bed and Breakfast (B&B) Guide
The Cheapest Bed and Breakfast (B&B) Guide
Set high on a hill with a commanding view of the Bay of Fundy, and the Historic Port and Skyline
of Saint John the Homeport Historic B&B/Inn c1858 provides the perfect setting to relax and
enjoy the gracious ambiance of Canada's oldest incorporated city.

The twin homes were built in 1858, predating Canadian confederation by 9 years, and were
constructed for a prominent shipbuilding family whose boat yard was located a few hundred
yards below on the harbor tidal flats. Its unique Italianate architecture reflects the opulence of
the time with very large bright windows and rooms, 10 foot ceilings, two free standing spiral
stair cases, and detailed wood work rosettes, finials and columns . Of particular interest is a
pair of carved figure heads that have stood sentinel in the formal twin parlors for nearly 150
years. Come stop for a while and enjoy these magnificently restored Mansions and be
pampered in Five Star luxury. Affordable, Convenient, and Unique the Homeport is the ideal site
for all your Bay of Fundy and Southern New Brunswick travels.

The owners, Karen and Ralph Holyoke, have furnished the HOMEPORT with fine antiques and
art in a distinctive maritime heritage theme to reflect the heyday of the clipper ships from 1850
to 1880. This theme is evident in the 10 large, comfortable guest suites . Each room is
impeccably furnished with a queen sized bed covered in fresh crisp linens and a feather duvet
or quilt. There is a private period style bathroom with either a claw footed tub, oversized soaker
tub or Whirlpool tub and thick fluffy cotton towels and robes. Each room has a sitting area with
TV, private line phone, Data port, A/C in season, and so many extras to make yours a
memorable stay.

Rooms:

The ten luxurious Rooms and Suites at the Homeport are available in four distinct price ranges
to match any budget, from our easily affordable Standard rooms to our World Class Premium
Suites. Our hallmark is service and quality at any price level. All rooms have TV, Phone,
Wireless Data Port, and AC in season. There is a full gourmet breakfast each day.

The decor in each of the Homeport Guest accommodations is unique and special. Fine
Antiques and a top of the line bed with quality linens are just the start. Please visit each room
and suite online to view photos and a more complete description and then select the one you
like best.

Shore Garden Room; The Shore Garden Room is light and airy with two large windows that
flood the room with afternoon sun all year round. The view is south, to the famous Martello
Tower and on to the Bay of Fundy, and west, through the trees to St. Peters church and the
grassy common that served as a public burial ground for the early settlers in the late 1700's
and early 1800's.

The decor is decidedly Victorian, fun and frivolous, with a pair of four poster single beds and
vibrant botanical themes. There is a private ensuite bath room with a unique cast iron
tub/shower rescued from a nearby house renovation. The lavish Twin sized beds are piled high
with pillows and are an irresistible invitation to luxuriate the morning away. Breakfast in bed is
available, but please try to make it down to the grand Galley dining room on at least one
morning.

Garden Room Rates
$109.00/night plus tax.

Rose Room; The standard priced Rose room is enchanting and has become the owners
favorite. It is decorated in the rich summery hue of roses with soft beige and brass accents. The
Rose room has been an early favorite with visitors also and was renamed "The Bed of Roses"
by one admirer, for the highlight of the room is an antique brass bed piled high with feather
pillows and an inviting down duvet. With this as a focal point and using a striking turn of the
century dresser set with a rounded "waterfall" front and oval mirrors we have been able to
create a pleasing and tranquil room. A delightful chaise lounge is carefully positioned under
one of the windows and is the perfect place to enjoy a sunny breakfast tray, read a book, or just
sit, and enjoy the view through the trees.

Every small detail was considered when designing this room. Rounded corners and an
archway grace the new ensuite bath with the antique claw footed bathtub/shower and Victorian
style sink. The owners chanced on a wonderful brass wall light dated 1905 which, after careful
restoration, now graces the bathroom.

Like all the rooms at Homeport the Rose Room is quite large and will easily accommodate a
stay of any length. Each room has individual temperature controls, private line telephone and
remote color television with a VCR and a selection of movies available on site.

Rose Room Rates
$109.00/night plus tax.

Fort Howe Room; Redecorated in 2007 this Standard priced room is a wonderful fusion of ruby
red  and pastel colors that stimulate the eye. A large private bath with checkerboard tile floor
and a welcoming cast iron, soaker tub with shower is a definite focal point for a relaxing
journey's end. A white Wicker queen bed and dark Walnut furniture highlight this room and
combined with the bright morning sun make it a joy to wake up in this boldly decorated, antique
filled space. The room is overlooking its namesake, Fort Howe, which was the site for a
Loyalist block house and garrison stationed in Saint John in the late 1700's . Of course this
King's Garrison was positioned overlooking the harbour to ensure the safety of St. John
residents from their rebellious neighbours to the south.

Like all the rooms at Homeport the Fort Howe Room is quite large and will easily
accommodate a stay of any length. Each room has individual temperature controls, private line
telephone and remote color television with a VCR and a selection of movies available on site.
Wireless internet is available.

Fort Howe Room Rates
$109.00/night plus tax.

Adriana Room; The Adriana Room was the masters bedroom and is furnished with an
impressive mahogany, Art Nouveau (Greek Revival ) bedroom set dating from 1913. The large
triple bay window, with partial views of up town and the harbour, flood the room with morning
sun and make a marvelous setting for a quiet breakfast retreat before you start your busy day.
And to relax before bed the private ensuite bath is fitted with a massive claw foot tub for a
leisurely hot soak or shower. In keeping with the Homeport 5 star ideals you will find thick fluffy
towels and robes and a top of the line bed for a great nights sleep.

The Adriana Room is named after the finest ship ever built for the Roberts fleet. She was built
and launched in 1863 from the Roberts own shipyard, located on the Straight Shore, a few
hundred meters below the house. The Adriana was described by a local reporter in 1863 as "a
very neat and substantial vessel of about 1400 tons Register... Mr. Roberts is building the
vessel for his own use and as far as we could learn is sparing neither pains nor expense to
render her a durable and serviceable ship". She was constructed of the very best New
Brunswick woods and The Messrs. Roberts, the reporter thought "deserve great credit for the
enterprise which they have displayed in building and sailing vessels on their own account. They
have several afloat at present, from which they are doubtless realizing a handsome profit".

Adriana did well for the brothers Roberts and sailed the world until February 1881 when she
was stranded and lost at the entrance to Galveston harbor in the Gulf of Mexico. Adriana's name
lives on today as the Master bedroom of the Homeport B&B/Inn. No doubt the halls of our
historic home rang with tales of her bold adventures and able service.

Adriana Room Rates
$129.00/night plus tax.

LaTour Room; The La Tour room is situated on the Harbour side of the Homeport Inn
overlooking the City, Harbour and the area where the Roberts brothers shipyard was located in
the 1850's. The room also looks over the site of its namesake, Fort La Tour, a French fur
traders' encampment. This fort was one of the first European settlements in the area and was
built by Charles La Tour in 1631. He and his intrepid wife Francoise Jaqueline found hardship,
adventure and unfortunately her death in this newly found land in the pursuit of wealth, fame
and glory.

The story of La Tour is well chronicled by Mrs. M.A. MacDonald in her book ''Fortune & La Tour''
and could not have been more intriguing and exhilarating if it had been developed by a
Hollywood screen writer. The site has yet to be developed although it was excavated in the early
1960's and a dedicated society has been formed to care and cultivate this important Heritage
site.

The Homeport's La Tour room is a warm, cozy and somewhat secluded retreat. At night from
the queen size Sleigh Bed you can watch the lighthouse on Partridge Island flashing a warning
to marine traffic. Did you know.....? The Fog Horn was invented in Saint John and the first
commercial fog horn was located on Partridge Island. Until 1997 you could clearly hear its
plaintive warning on foggy days. Unfortunately cutbacks and modern technology have silenced
the horn permanently.

There is a very large 1930's vintage ensuite bathroom with a large soaker tub/shower to rinse
the road weary miles away. After a good nights sleep you can enjoy a morning sunrise in this
bright cheery room. The room is furnished with a TV, phone, work table and all the luxury
amenities of a Canada Select FIVE STAR accommodation.

LaTour Room Rates
$129.00/night plus tax.
